Idea Cellular did something nice and then fucked it up completely

Few weeks ago, I noticed something different on the Idea 3G Prepaid page. The company had launched a carry forward feature on limited data plans. This meant that you could carry over your remaining data when you recharged for the coming weeks as long as you did it before the expiry of the previous data.

On 3G limited volume recharges customer can now carry forward the remaining data balance by recharging with another 3G limited volume recharge before expiry of first recharge. In case of carry forward, customer will get the remaining validity of first recharge or validity of new recharge, whichever is higher. Source

This was super useful as it enabled me to get a larger topup. See, I work from home. This means that my 3G usage on the phone is minimal and I end up recharging only when I am going out for more than a few hours.

The carry forward feature meant that I could just get a long-term data topup and keep on extending it while accumulating the data without wasting it. Right now, I end up wasting 50–90% of the data of the topup depending upon how much time I spend on the road.

So I ended up recharging for their longest time validity plan Rs. 598 for 60 days for 2GB data. Today is the day this topup expires and I went back to the site with the aim of extended it by another two months. My plan still has around a GB of data left so it looked good.

Idea however had other plans…

They have changed the policy to make it less lucrative for users like me. The changed policy has a few restrictions. It only applies to data topups which are less than 1GB. This is a problem because the longest validty available is just 20 days. And my current topup is not compatible so I would lose all the data in my account right now.

#On select 3G limited volume recharges with up to 1GB data benefit, customer can now carry forward the remaining data balance by recharging with another 3G limited volume recharge only up to 1GB data benefit before expiry of first recharge. In case of carry forward, customer will get the remaining validity of first recharge or validity of new recharge, whichever is higher. Carry forward facility is not available on 3G limited volume recharges with higher than 1GB data benefit, on 3G unlimited volume pack, on 2G limited/unlimited volume pack recharge and will result in losing existing data balance. Source

So, there are two options in front of me right now. I can switch to 20 day topups and keep on extending them. Or I can go back to my topup when I need data on the move strategy. Pretty annoying to be honest.
